Going on a Bug Hunt

This week we went on a bug hunt in our forest school area, looking carefully for bugs and minibeasts in their natural habitat.
We checked under logs, under the tarpaulin, looked in the trees and long grass, and we found some in the bushes too. We found ants, earwigs, beetles, little tiny spiders and woodlice. We didn’t see any worms today – we think it was too dry for them to come out.

Children in Reception are learning to:
Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.
